If you’ve read any of my other posts about Greece, you’ll know that after highschool, I took a “finding myself” trip for 4 months in Greece. Originally I did this to experience something before starting college. That desire sparked a chain of events in my life which ultimately led to me becoming Greece wedding photographer.
So I took everything I had at the time and bought a plane ticket to Greece! Its not like I’ve dreamed of Greece all my life either. I just wanted to be somewhere beautiful, near water & fresh food, with lots of gorgeous landscapes for me to photograph and explore. I hopped online and began looking for a work-away situation or job that would allow me to afford taking a trip this long, and found a position living on a sail boat as a skipper for 4 months! BOOM. I found it. And I sold. I’m going to Greece!
Living in Greece for those 4 months changed my life. For one, it completely awakened an appetite for travel and adventure (hence now I’m a destination wedding photographer). But it was also the first time I had ever fallen in love with a country and culture that wasn’t my own. I was addicted to the experience of new food, language, and terrain!
I still remember the first time that I’d gotten a day off from the ship. I packed up my camera and took a hike up the mountainside of the island to watch the sunset. Looking out over the mountainous cliffside, I immediately imagined how beautiful this country would be for a wedding. To this day, Greece is one of my favorite wedding destinations! Mykonos, Santorini, Sifnos, Crete, Corfu, and Athens are all beautiful and offer something unique for your wedding day!
First, book a wedding planner! I recommend booking a Greece wedding planner or a planner who is experienced with working in Greece. First because some venues will only take couples through a wedding planner, but also because even for a super small elopement there are lots of legal + visual logistics. You want to make sure that everything comes together smoothly, and especially for bigger days, you want to be able to relax.
Its going to be helpful to have someone who speaks the language while coordinating florals, catering, and other logistics. Not to say that you can’t do it with a destination planner, just make sure you find someone you know you can trust completely. I recommend Tie the Knot Santorini or Julia and Evita Wedding Planning and Design.
Second, based on where you’re coming from, find out what it will take to have your wedding be legal. There may be a good bit of hassle depending on what the requirements are, so I personally suggest doing all the legal paperwork back home in the states. And then having your wedding ceremony (which is the more symbolic and official feeling) in Greece.
If you opt to get legally married in Greece, just make sure to do the extra research and talk with your vendors! We’re experienced with these things and are here to help! It can take a couple of months for all documents to be processed and then there is an expiration date from the time of issuing to get it finalized.
Finally, LEGAL marriage is not yet recognized for the LGBTQ+ community yet in Greece. While this is super frustrating and disappointing, it shouldn’t stop you or your partner from having the wedding of your dreams! Unless you’re a citizen of Greece, you can opt to have your legal marriage validated before or after the wedding ceremony, at home in the States. Its sad that we still have to do this, of course, but it’s an honor to represent and empower ourselves. Little legalities won’t stop us!
